I took care of more than 20 patients who needed 24-hour care. I couldn’t
handle it anymore. At night I couldn’t sleep. My blood pressure became very
high, my memory declined and I developed neurasthenia. I didn’t dare to do
24-hour work anymore. My employer, Chinese-American Planning Council,
threatened to not give me work anymore. And I didn’t work.
I’m now retired. I am opposed to 24-hour work system. I’m even more
opposed to being paid for only 12 hours out of the 24-hour shift. Having taken
care of so many heavily ill patients from dementia to complete paralysis that
needed 24-hour care, I have not been able to consecutively sleep for three
hours. I don’t want other home attendants who care for patients to end up
with health problems like I did. I hope the government abolishes the 24-hour
work-day system and divides it into 2 shifts. This way would be much better
for both patients and home attendants.
