I’ve been a care worker for 6 years, working 24-hour shifts from 2012 to
2014. I worked 3 to 5 days a week.
My patient Grandma Sun had colon cancer, so the post-surgery care work
had to be meticulous. We also had to take care of her husband. At night
the two of them would get out of bed at different times, and I had to get
up with them to take care of them. Usually at night they would get up 5 or
6 times, so I had no way of continuously sleeping more than 2 hours a
night.
I joined a lawsuit to ask for 24 hours of wages. The judges have already
made a decision on some of these cases, that 24-hour workers should get
24 hours of wages. But the boss does not act according to the law, and the
Department of Labor not only doesn’t help workers, but actually uses
emergency regulation to suppress our demands! We went to the union to
complain, but to no avail. How is this leaving us women workers with any
lifelines?! The system of 24-hour shifts shouldn't continue! For the health
and vitality of workers and patients, splitting into 2 shifts is very necessary.
